What a Proper Household SOP System Should Include
A household SOP system is not a binder on a shelf. It is the living documentation that lets a new housekeeper, chef, or household manager perform at standard within their first week — and lets the principal step away without the home skipping a beat.
At minimum, a proper system covers: the household manual (philosophy, standards, expectations, confidentiality), role descriptions and daily/weekly/monthly checklists for every position, opening and closing procedures for each season, vendor directories with scope and escalation paths, and emergency protocols for medical, security, fire, and severe weather.
It should also include the operational details that quietly define a home: laundry and linen protocols, pantry and bar pars, wine and cellar management, vehicle care schedules, guest arrival and departure choreography, and pet routines.
The documentation has to be owned by someone. Without a household manager or advisor accountable for keeping it current, even the best SOP system goes stale within a year.
Done right, the system is invisible to the principal and indispensable to the staff. That is the point.
